The JV boys faced a tough challenge from UHS for the second straight year, and this year the championship would be essentially a dual meet with Lick and UHS JV teams better than half the varsities in the league and no other team having the quality depth to field a strong JV team.
University runners over the first half of the race were slightly ahead of us, but we had runners positioned to move up and change that. Coming onto the Polo Fields with less than a mile to go, our boys had moved up. Egon Conway was running strong, his best race of the year, and had increased his hold on 2nd place. Ivan Barrales and Steve Page had moved ahead of Uni’s #2 and the big boost for us was coming from the long closing drive to the front by Tayeb Zaidi. From across the Polo Field, one could see Tayeb move up, pass, and break away from one Uni runner after another. He passed their #s 4, 3, and finally 2 to move into 5th overall, giving us a nearly unbeatable 2, 3, 4, 5...as long as Sean Mock, recovering from illness, could hold on. And he did. William Worm and Tony Martinez beat Uni's #5 to bump up their score and help us to a 23-35 victory, with Stuart Hall well back in 3rd at 88.
Michael Kreher, as he has all season, led our boys team and just missed earning a First Team All League spot, finishing 8th just outside the first team. He was joined on the All League second team by soph Jack Crawford, setting another big PR, and Corey Robinson. Avery Rock and Matt Jenkins turned in identical times and finished 16th and 17th, just outside the All League second team. Zach Oji completed our team by running another PR to finish 23rd. Connor Jordan missed the meet due to illness, so we ran only 6 runners.
As predicted, Uni won their 18th straight boys title. MA once again barely held us off (62-66), but we continue to draw closer to one of the teams we need to beat at NCS to have a shot at a State Meet qualifying berth.
