Tigers Take Back the Title, Outscore MA and UHS Combined!

Coach Jeff Gardiner
After a two-year hiatus, the perpetual trophy is back in its rightful home: the Lick Trophy Case. The boys ended MA's two year run at the top with a resounding victory on Saturday. Led by dominate performances in the high jump, discus, shot put, and 300 hurdles, the boys pulled away as the meet progressed, turning a close meet in the early going into a route by the end when the discus throw triumphantly concluded the meet for us with 3 throwers in the final flight to lead a  1-2-3-4-6 finish in the discus.

Final team score:

1. Lick 172
2. MA 87
3. UHS 81
4. Urban 58
5. IHS 30
6. Stuart Hall 32
7 & 8. Bay and Leadership 0

The boys team held its own in the sprints and distances and then completely dominated its best events. The team was led by John Grover-Roybal's first place finishes in the West high jump and discus and his second-place finish by Danny Brosnahan in the shot put. Those 28 points exceeded the totals of four teams. But John was hardly alone. Joseph Begun led a 1-5 sweep of the hurdles with John Ribeiro-Broomhead in second and Thuto Durkac Somo in third (to go along with his second in the 110 highs)--all three qualifying for NCS. Caesar Soledad and Dash Bodington completed the sweep (Dash qualified for NCS in the 110 highs). Our high jumpers swept the West behind John. Freshman Micah Fobbs, Andrew Rauch, and Jackson Clawson joined seniors John and Dash to complete the sweep there. The discus crew led by John and Danny nearly pulled off a sweep by going 1-2-3-4-6. Those 3 events sealed the win, but were hardly the total of our accomplishment.

In total, 10 members of the team qualified for NCS. Dash Bodington, Danny Brosnahan, Thuto Durkac Somo, John Grover-Roybal, Mike Hendrickson, John Ribeiro-Broomhead, Michael Kreher, Caleb Banks, Gevon Taylor, and Tomas Fuentes-Afflick. With both relay teams making it. The 4x4 on its 3rd place finish and the 4x1 by meeting the At Large performance standard.

At the conclusion of the meet, the coaches voted John Grover-Roybal the Outstanding Field Event Performer in the BCL West.
